I honestly didn't think I would tear up twice while reading this book. At work no less.
I often find it hard to come across a book that blends two different genres together so effortlessly while also maintaining consistent characters, great pacing and an amazing atmosphere all at the same time, but this story did just that and more. Mystery is one of my favorite genres, especially when it has classic tropes like the a genius mind pairing up with a stoic and staunch partner. Nothing makes me more elated than a good mystery, and the mystery in this story had me hooked from beginning to end. My brain was working overtime piecing the mystery together. Although, this story goes outside the bounds of reality with fantasy, Robert Bennet presents the magic system in such a way that is easy to pick up on so you can jump right back into figuring out the mystery with what you've learned. I'm absolutely obsessed.
One thing that I loved the most about this book is definitely the relationship between Din and Ana. In many of the detective stories I've read, the main detective (in this case Ana), is usually completely absorbed in their cases that they tend to neglect their personal relationships. This isn't the case for Ana and she seems very aware of Din and his feelings. This was very refreshing to see and this awareness really made them feel like true partners.
The main mystery was so full of twists and turns, and just when I thought I had all the answers, another element is thrown in that completely left me baffled. The magic system and imagery is so interesting. There were a lot of moments that reminded me of what you would see in a dark fairytale. I would say that this story is fairly mature in nature and there were a few disturbing moments that may be a little much for some readers. The mystery gets so wild by the end.
I am also proud of myself for being able to predict the ending. I know a lot of people may take this as the story being bad, but for me, this is the best kind of mystery. Being able to involve myself in the mystery a long side the characters using all the clues the author gives me.
Not only is the story well done, but the main characters and those we meet along the way, feel so tangible. Ana made me smile so much with her quick wit and satirical personality, while Din was lovable and I could easily connect with him as a person. We get to see so much more of their backstories and motivations here, so much so that I became especially emotional at the end of it all. There was even a moment right after a big reveal with a character we don't spend much time with, that weighed so heavily, that I was truly emotionally moved.
Nothing is more satisfying than a story that ends but still lingers in my mind. It still lingers even now.
My Rating (5/5): ★★★★★
