This book is a romance/comedy that follows characters Poppy and Alex through multiple crazy summer vacations together. Although their friendship is a strange one, with him being more reserved and studious, and her being outgoing and spontaneous, they somehow fit perfectly together. But, due to certain circumstances following one summer vacation that pushed them apart, they've lost touch. Though Poppy is living her dream life in New York now, she could never forget the old life she left back at home, including Alex. So, she devises a plan in hopes to make things right again. One more spontaneous adventure on vacation with her best friend.
“Like a good book or an incredible outfit, being on vacation transports you into another version of yourself.”
― Emily Henry, People We Meet On Vacation
I really enjoyed this story. It was refreshing after such a tough time getting back into reading. The characters were both very fleshed out. The author did a great job with adding small nuances that made both characters feel extremely real, and I really felt for them throughout everything. I teared up during the sad and emotional moments and I laughed out loud at many of the jokes. I really loved the jokes.
I found myself comparing the characters to who I am and how I react to situations. I found that I connected with both of them. They are both complex characters and it was hard for me to find fault in them without, at the same time, understanding why they said, felt, or did the things they had. I can tell the author has had a lot of writing practice with how she was able to wind the story together. The story is set up with past and present summers that slowly build up to the climax, and it worked so well. I felt myself wondering what the big mic drop moment would be, and once the moment happened, it felt so...human. Nothing extreme or out of character. It made sense because the story did such a good job of building each character. The romance was great too. All of them were fun to read about. Overall, I had a fun time with this story. Though it could get heavy at times, it was very light hearted and seriously adorable. I would definitely recommend it.
